This class will explore popular culture and social images of  race and gender (and the intersections between the two) through science fiction and speculative fiction films, short stories, and articles. Science fiction is one of the few literatures that allows us to revision the world around us  and our future. We will explore the ways that is informed by mainstream race, gender, power and privilege paradigms, and study alternative ideas.
